Commonly Used Materials for Pipes and Fittings in A Gas Pipe System

In most urban settings nowadays, homeowners prefer to obtain natural and cooking gas through piped systems. Gas pipelines for domestic distribution is still not common but is fast catching on owing to its various advantages. Not the least of these is the on-demand availability of gas which is not possible with the gas cylinders which are conventionally used in most Indian homes. The supply of gas through pipelines is extremely efficient and requires specialized equipment. Pipes and fittings used in gas pipeline systems are manufactured from materials which can withstand the high pressure at which the gas is supplied through the pipelines. Here are some of the commonly used materials for gas pipeline systems, including both metal and non-metal materials:

1.    Among metallic pipes, steel pipes are the most preferred materials for the supply of gas in a piped network. This is largely due to their ability to withstand corrosion and their durability. Additionally, they are ideal for supply of high pressure components in external conditions as well.

2.    In non-metal materials for gas pipelines, polyvinyl chloride or PVC pipes are an ideal choice. These pipes can be installed underground or in external conditions and withstand damage and corrosion from the elements and from chemicals. They too are suitable for high pressure applications including the transport of gas.

3.    Polyethylene or PE is another suitable material for the transport of gas through a piped network. Another type of thermoplastic material, PE pipes are durable, long lasting and resistant to corrosion, while also allowing for the transport of gases at high pressure. They are generally used for gas mains.

4.    The rigid flexibility of copper makes it suitable for the installation of gas pipe networks. However, not all types of copper are approved for gas supply and only L and K type copper may be suitable. They are largely used for distribution channels.

5.    The durability of the black iron pipes and their resistance to cracks under pressure during the supply of high pressure gas makes them suitable for piped network installations. However, many areas prohibit the use of black iron and it is ideal to check with the local authorities for specifications.
